Losing 3rd, 5th and reverse together is a well-known failure on the GM 6-speed used in first-generation Traverses, often caused by a broken wave plate in the 3-5-reverse clutch. Have your mechanic confirm the diagnosis. If the transmission must come apart anyway, a used OEM unit with confirmed mileage is often the more practical repair.
