The first-generation 2003–2005 Aviator uses a 4.6L DOHC 32-valve V8, and the second-generation Aviator from the 2020 model year uses a 3.0L twin-turbo V6, including the Grand Touring plug-in hybrid. Frequently asked questions
No. The Aviator uses the 4.6L DOHC 32-valve V8, while the Explorer and Mountaineer of those years used a 4.6L SOHC V8. They are different engines, so a used Explorer V8 is not a direct replacement. We match your Aviator engine by VIN.
The Grand Touring pairs the 3.0L twin-turbo V6 with a hybrid system, and parts and calibration can differ from the standard Aviator. Send us your VIN so we can confirm the right engine for your model.
Replace the timing components if they show wear, change the oil and filter, replace the thermostat and check the cooling system, transfer your intake and accessories as needed, and on the 3.0L inspect the turbocharger oil and coolant lines before start-up.
