Before You Install a Used Engine: A Mechanic's Checklist

DriveCore Auto Parts Β· 6 min read

A used engine or transmission is only as good as its installation. Most early failures we hear about are caused by something that was skipped during the swap. This checklist covers the basics a professional installer will follow.

When the unit arrives

  • Inspect the crate and the unit for freight damage before signing, and note any damage on the delivery receipt
  • Compare the unit to your old one: mounts, sensor locations, connectors and the part number on the tag
  • Tell the seller within 48 hours if anything looks wrong (that is our window for damaged or incorrect parts)

Engines

  • Replace the oil and oil filter, and use the oil type in your owner's manual
  • Replace the coolant and check hoses, the radiator and thermostat
  • Check the timing belt or chain service history; replace a timing belt if its condition is unknown
  • Transfer or replace gaskets and seals on parts moved from the old engine
  • Prime the oiling system before the first start

Transmissions

  • Flush or replace the transmission cooler and lines, since debris from the failed unit can ruin the new one
  • Fill with the exact fluid type specified for your transmission
  • Check the torque converter is fully seated before bolting up
  • Some vehicles need the transmission control module relearned or programmed after installation

Keep your paperwork

Our 3-year parts warranty requires installation by an ASE certified mechanic, a dated installation receipt, and new fluids and filters (plus cooler flushing for transmissions) at installation. Keep these together with your invoice.
