Used vs. Rebuilt vs. Remanufactured Engines: What Is the Difference?

DriveCore Auto Parts Β· 6 min read

When your engine or transmission fails, you usually have three replacement choices. They are not the same thing, and the price difference between them is large.

Used OEM (original equipment)

A used OEM unit is the original factory engine or transmission taken from another vehicle of the same type, usually a vehicle that was in an accident while the powertrain was still healthy. It is not opened up. It is normally the lowest-cost option, and because it is a factory unit it matches your vehicle's original specifications. Mileage varies from unit to unit, so always ask for the mileage in writing.

Rebuilt

A rebuilt unit has been taken apart and the worn or broken parts replaced, while parts that still measure within specification are reused. Quality depends heavily on the shop that did the work. Ask exactly which parts were replaced and what the warranty covers.

Remanufactured

A remanufactured unit is completely disassembled, cleaned and machined, and wear parts are replaced to meet a set specification. It is usually the most expensive choice, often costing several times more than a used OEM unit.

How to choose

  • Budget first and vehicle in good overall condition: a low-mileage used OEM unit is usually the best value
  • Older or rare vehicle with no good used units available: consider a rebuild
  • Keeping the vehicle for many years and the budget allows it: remanufactured
  • Whatever you choose: get the price, mileage and warranty terms in writing before paying

Every used OEM engine and transmission we sell comes with a 3-year parts warranty on major internal parts and free liftgate shipping in the lower 48 states.
