What Mileage to Expect on a Used Engine or Transmission

DriveCore Auto Parts Β· 4 min read

Mileage is one of the first questions customers ask, and it is a good one. Lower mileage generally means less wear. But the right answer depends mostly on how old your vehicle is, because a replacement unit normally comes from a vehicle of a similar age.

Typical miles by vehicle age (from our quotes)

These ranges come from the units we have quoted to customers, not from estimates. They are a guide, not a promise: the exact unit and miles are always confirmed in writing before you pay.

  • Vehicles up to 5 years old: engines often around 24K miles, transmissions around 55K
  • 6 to 10 years old: engines around 50K, transmissions around 60K
  • 11 to 15 years old: engines around 65K, transmissions around 63K
  • 16 to 20 years old: engines around 73K, transmissions around 76K
  • Over 20 years old: engines around 78K, transmissions around 79K

Can I get lower miles?

Often, yes. Lower-mileage units do come up, sometimes well under the typical figure, but they can cost more and may take longer to find. Tell us your target mileage and we will tell you honestly what is available.

Mileage is not everything

  • Ask how the unit was checked (for example compression or shift testing)
  • Ask for photos of the actual unit
  • Make sure the warranty is in writing and covers internal parts
