Frequently asked questions
Not as a simple swap. The N52 is naturally aspirated and the N55 is turbocharged, with different intake, exhaust, cooling, wiring and engine computer. The replacement should be the same engine your X5 left the factory with, which we confirm from your VIN.
BMW changed engines between model years and between trims of the same year, for example the E70 X5 moved from the N52 and N62 to the N55 and N63 for 2011. The VIN tells us the exact model, engine and build date so the used engine matches your wiring, mounts and software.
Replace gaskets, seals, spark plugs and coolant, inspect the cooling system (water pump, thermostat, hoses and expansion tank), the oil filter housing gasket and the motor mounts, and transfer sensors in good condition. On turbo engines, inspect the turbochargers, oil lines and charge pipes before the first start.
